My best avatar for solo play (for my playstyle) is my necro/minion master. The warrior does ok, but gets overrun in large groups. My favorite 2 are the necro (staff & minion master,) and ranger (longbow & pet). Really depends on your playstyle. I have seen people soloing on pretty much everything You can technically roam solo with any build if you're good. There are tons of videos showing 1vX for engineer, mesmer, thief, etc. If you're up against a halfway decent player and you're not up-to-par, it doesn't matter what class you choose -- you'll have a hard time. Second best solo class might be monk or ele depending on the area. E/Mes use earth magic to tank damage and kill, monks use superior(-75 HP) runes to get their health low and use Protective Spirit, Shielding Hands, Shield of Absorption and regen skills to be damn near unkillable(as long as you don't get rended interrupted or hit with lifesteal). Play necromancer if you have the expansions strong solo class. If you don't have any expansions, play guardian. If you want to test classes, make sure to go to the PvP lobby with a new character with whatever class, and you can try out all the skills there at max level to get a feel of it. .
